A Stranger’s Cell Phone
The ringing was endless. At first it started faintly, as if in my neighbors house. Nothing to fret over, they will answer. It almost sounded like it stopped, but it didn’t and I shouldn’t have thought it did. It just kept ringing and ringing, that shrill sound that cuts through the air. It didn’t go away and in truth it might have always been there. Ringing constantly, never ending, pick it up dammit already! Or silence it! But it won’t be silenced, we can never silence it. On the busses, trains, car rides, the dinner table, it will constantly be ringing. Shrill and loud as ever. There has to be a way, a way to block out the signal, to silence it forever. But there isn’t. That ringing is here to stay.
